We are flawed individuals who dont always get it right.How do I get my boss to like me, even if I dont like them? may be the prevailing question. But Im afraid its leid the right question. For one, its inherently flawed logic. Youre allowed to bedrngnis like them, but theyre not allowed to not like you? That doesnt seem right.Lets take this question and flip it around to look at it from a confident angle. The real question is, What do I do when my boss doesnt like me?Make Sure Your e Removing Yourself From the EquationThere will always be someone at work who challenges you, who pushes your last button. And its probably going to be a boss at some point or another. And guess what? You will be that person to someone else along the way.People usually know when theyre not liked. If you think your boss doesnt like you- and you dont like your boss- its entirely possible they know how you feel and are responding to your negative energy and attitude. Should they be? No. But if I can get one point across to you in this article, its that your boss is a human and theyre not always as in control of their behavior and emotions as they should be. (Who hasnt snapped at someone or rolled their eyes and regretted it moments later?)So, the next time your manager does something that you think indicates he or she doesnt like you, put a mirror on yourself (metaphorically, of course) and note your response. How did your body language change? How did you respond? Theres a good chance youre feeding off each other. While being aware of that might not change how your boss interacts with you, youll at least know youre not part of the problem.Redefine Your Expectations of Relationship at WorkMore tough love for you Work is a transactional environment. You are compensated to provide a service or skill. Your boss is not required to like you. Yes, you deserve to work at a company in which you dont feel like youre just clocking in and out. Work friends matter. Good bosses matter. But unfortunately, not every company and not every manager see it that way, and you mightve found yourself working at a place in which thats the case.This doesnt mean you should work in abject cruelty, but it should help you establish appropriate expectations for your time at this office. Gaining a working friendship with your boss is a bonus. An achievement. It is not a guarantee. Its harder to be outright rude to someone when theyre checking off everything you expected. Unless youre a truly terrible person, the fact that your boss doesnt like you very rarely has anything to do with you. They might be miserable ab out something happening at home or elsewhere in the office and be taking it out on you. Or, maybe something about you is a trigger for them based on a past experience. Perhaps theyre just a curmudgeon. To tie all of this together, you must understand the difference between self-esteem and confidence. Self-esteem (or lack thereof) says, They will/must/dont like me. Confidence says, Ill be fine if they dont.Challenge yourself to keep showing up, doing great work, and behaving in a way that makes you feel proud of yourself. Remember this You wont work with this person forever. Either one of you will leave, move to a different department, or take on a new role altogether.And youll hopefully be able to look back at your time together with a lot of lessons learned about what kind of manager you want in the future- and maybe even what kind of manager you want to be.

Army BCT turns civilians into soldiers and teaches them marching, shooting, survival skills, and prepares them for life in the Army. The Army has several training base locations including Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina Fort Knox in Louisville, Kentucky Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Missouri and Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. Where you attend is primarily dependent upon the location of your follow-on, Advanced Individual Training (Job Training). In fact, if you enlist in one of the Combat Arms MOSs, you very well may receive basic training and Advanced Individual Training all at one location Fort Benning for Infantry Fort Knox forArmor Fort Leonard Wood for Combat Engineers, Military Police, and Chemical. Things You Can Do Before BCT 202 Watch Now 7 Tips for Surviving Military Boot Camp A significant portion of your nine weeks at Army BCT will be taken up with marching, drill, ceremonies, and standing in formation. Your arms will thank you if you take some time before arriving at boot camp to study about and practice the basics of the drill. Its also a good idea to start ahead of the game by memorizing Army officer and enlistedranks. You will also want to memorize the Army General Orders. There are seven ArmyCore Valuesthat will be continually hammered into you during your nine-week training. You will live, eat, and sleep about Army Core Valuesuntil you think they are part of the Constitution. Memorizing these seven core values in advance may give you a little extra breather time while others are trying to commit them to memory. Each new recruit is issued a copy ofTRADOC Pamphlet 600-4. You can give yourself a head-start in learning some of the things you will need to know to graduate boot camp by studying this pamphlet in advance. Physical Preparation Do not forget to work out and prepare physically for the rigors of ansturmning, pushups, load-bearing exercises and rucking with 40-50 lbs in a backpack for many miles. You will have to pass a basic fitness test of pushups, situps, and a 2 mile run as well as a more advanced Army Combat Readiness Test that involves some new exercises such as deadlifts, a 250m (drag, carry, sprint) shuttle run, hanging knee ups, an overhead medicine ball power throw, T-pushups, and another 2 mile run. Reception Battalion The good news is that will in processing the exerzieren Sergeants do not yell at you (that much) except for the ones assigned test you withthe Initial PT Test.Consider in motivation. If you fail this test, you will get to spend some time in remedial trainingwhere brand-new Drill Instructors get to practice on you for a while. While in the Reception Battalion, you will get your shots, process your paperwork, be issued your uniforms, and that very favorite of all the haircut. Between times, you will go to chow (three times per day), and you will wait. You will know your group is getting close to getting out of Purgatory when the Drill Sergeants start to notice you. The First Few Weeks After Reception From Week One to Week Three. The first thing you will notice about your new drill sergeant is that he or she appears to be a different species from the ones hanging around the Reception Battalion. He/she will appear to be much larger, much meaner, and very much louder. Army Drill Sergeants absolutely love push-ups. Drop and Give me Twenty is a favorite phrase (shouted, of course). On this first day, pretty much everyone will get dropped. You will be dropped individually, in pairs, and as an entire platoon. Consider it time to work out and relieve some stress. Week one is best characterized by a term known asTOTAL CONTROL. Total control is where the soldiers only do what they are told to do by their Drill Sergeants. The first few weeks of Basic Training is definitelyNOTthe time t o find a better way of doing things. Soldiers arrive at the Basic Training Unit from the Reception Battalion and are immediately immersed in an environment where every move they make is scrutinized by the Drill Sergeant. During the first week, you will start Physical Training and typically first thing in the morning. The typical day throughout Basic Training runs from 0430 (You got to get up very early in able to do more before 9 am than fruchtwein people do all day), with lights out at 2100 (900 PM). During the first week or so, nobodywill be able to doanythingright. However, by the end of the first week, you will be able to do what you are told, when you are told, and exactly how you are told to do it. The word, why? will be surgically removed from your vocabulary before that first week is finished. Standing Guard Duty. The Army uses Fire Guards. It amounts to the same thing two-hour shifts of walking around the barracks, keeping watch in case someone tries to steal it, or wor se yet, platzdeckchen it on fire. Total Control continues the second week, along with courses on Army Core Values (including classes on sexual harassment and race relations), and other military-related subjects (such as the fundamentals of bayonet fighting, and first aid training). During the second week is also where you get to practice hacking, coughing, and crying in the Gas Chamber. This normally occurs in the afternoon, shortly after lunch. No matter how hungry you are that day, eat a very light lunch. While in the chamber, youll take your mask off two times (once, you merely lift the mask to state your name, rank, and social security number). If you can get away with keeping your eyes closed and not breathing this nasty stuff, go for it. However, its far more likely that the Drill Sergeant will make sure you open your eyes and take at least a small breath before you are let out of the chamber. Also during the second week, you will be introduced to your rifle. It is a rifle. M ore specifically, its an M4Rifle. You dont get to shoot it during the second week. Right now, you get to learn how to hold it, point it, take it apart, clean it, and repetitively put it back together, take it apart again. During the final week of Phase I, the Drill Sergeants will (very slowly) start to move the emphasis of training away from the individual, to team. You will be assigned a Battle Buddy. Your Battle Buddy is like your Siamese twin. You will go everywhere and do everything together. Of course, as with all weeks, physical training and drill continue during week three, as well as more training/practice taking your rifle apart, and putting it together. Weapons and Combat Training Time During the weeks 4-6, you will spend most of your time on various ranges. You will start with basic M4 shooting (just try to hit the targets), and move on to farther targets, pop-up targets, grenades, grenade launchers, and more. You will be surprised at how many different ranges one Arm y post has. During the 5th week, you will get practice using bayonets and an introduction to anti-tankweapons and other heavy weapons. Sample job descriptions When you're writing the perfect resume, it should be tailored to support a specific job goal. One of the best ways to ensure your resume is properly positioned is to identify sample job descriptions that you're interested in and qualified to perform. Search online and gather a few job postings that represent the type of position you're targeting. It doesn't matter if the location is ideal; for this purpose, you should only be concerned with the job description and its requirements. Copy and paste the text of the description itself into a Word or Google document and then highlight or bold any requirements or desirable skills from the posting you possess. This will help you or your writer identify which of your qualifications should be showcased throughout the resume. Technical skills and proficiencies What technical platforms and tools are you proficient? List all that apply to your work. Be specific and as comprehensive as possible. This list can include anything from social media platforms to project management systems and computer languages. If you've worked with proprietary platforms, list those as well. Your professional experience Start with your most recent job and work your way backward. The perfect resume should detail out all your professional positions within the past 15 years. For each role, list the following information: Company Name and URL Job Title: If your title is very specific to your organization, you can include a translation of sorts in parentheses next to your official job title. Start and End Dates: Include the month and year for each of these dates. Job Description: Think about your roles and responsibilities as they relate to your target role. This is especially important if you'd like to change careers. Include details such as how many people you managed or supervised, the territories you covered, etc. Achievements: Brainstorm a list of your accomplishments and major contributions that benefited the organization during your tenure. The number of achievements you provide will depend upon how long you remained in that role and how relevant it is to your current job goals. Quantify your accomplishments whenever possible; for instance, how did you help save the company money, generate revenue, improve customer satisfaction, increase productivity, and so forth? If you have an existing resume, only include new details in this section. There's no reason to repeat anything that already appears in your current resume. Early career history If you've been in the workforce for over 15 years, chances are you have a few positions that got left out of the previous section. Before you get started writing the perfect resume, make a list of the job titles you held, the names of each employer, the locations where you worked, and your dates of employment for these roles. While the dates will likely not get used in your resume, it's good to have a clear record of your earlier experiences for the writer. Volunteer work Have you been actively volunteering with a non-profit organization? Skills-based volunteering (SBV) is a great way to fill an employment gap or supplement your work history when you're trying to change careers. Please list any volunteer work you've done that's relevant to your current job goals in chronological order, beginning with your most recent work.If you're new to the workforce, include any campus activities or clubs in which you were active. List the institution, its location, the name of your degree, your major and minor, your graduation year, and any honors associated with the degree, such as summa or magna cum laude. Do the same for any relevant certifications you've obtained or additional training opportunities or workshops you've attended. Third-party feedback Have you received positive customer testimonials or a great performance review? Include this information in your preparation materials. How Your Brain Impacts Career Goals-The Muse How Your Brain Impacts Career Goals When it comes to decision-making, you probably think that you have the ability to do whatever you want. After all, you have free will- the innate human ability to choose for yourself. In reality, though, the way you make decisions is much more complicated. It turns out that thinking is much less determined by your personal agenda and much more influenced by your environmental and social realities than you may have thought. And this is particularly true when it comes to our career decisions. Here’s why: When you engage your cognitive process, it often defaults to take in what it needs to survive. In the words of Richard Boyatzis’ Intentional Change Theory, you are most often thinking in terms of your Real Self, the self that is fighting for survival. However, to set a career goal, and more importantly to create the energy to carry it out, you need to turn your attention to thriving (rather than surviving). In other words, your default thinking process becomes cumbersome to your desired future outcome. How Your Brain Works in Uncharted Territory Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking, Fast and Slow can help us further understand and make use of this idea. In the book, he uses the characters “System 1” and “System 2” (terms adopted from psychologists Keith Stanovich and Richard West) to highlight two roads that the brain normally defaults to. He explains: “System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control.” Think about the last time that you walked into a meeting somewhere you had never previously been. I would guess that you opened the door, walked in, took stock of the room, and then picked a chair to sit in, in front of a table. System 1 is the character in your brain that helps you automatically recognize what’s in front of you and gives you the confidence to sit down, because you “know” that you’re not going to fall down. System 2, on the other hand: “…allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. The operations of System 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration.” Imagine you walk into a room in which System 1 fails to recognize any of its contents. Nothing looks like a traditional chair or table- or even room, for that matter. In other words, your brain is failing to find past references to make sense of this reality. In this moment, System 2 would kick in. Your concentration would become more intentional about your surroundings, and you would feel as if it took more effort to figure out what to do in this new, seemingly bizarre space. The latter example (System 2) describes how you may feel while navigating through a career obstacle. After all, more often than not, challenging career goals lead you to new, awkward, uncomfortable places. The good news is: When you find yourself in uncharted territory, you have the opportunity to grow. The bad news is that it doesn’t necessarily mean that you know how to embrace- or even recognize- the growth while it’s happening. Often the discomfort can feel overwhelming. In these instances, the stress signals in your brain will fire, causing your brain to go “running for the hills” in search of System 1. Your brain operates on a path of least resistance and will always try to find the easiest way to do something. When faced with adversity, it will try to use System 1 to find an answer. Often, though, the “right” answer will also be the most comfortable answer- the solution that most closely resembles some situation in the past that mirrors your present. But what happens when the challenge you set for yourself leads you to truly new experiences? What if the answer that System 1 finds takes you two steps back, instead of one step forward? You must first be aware that your brain is not trying to trick you, it’s trying to work as efficiently as possible. After all, that’s how it has evolved to manage the complexities of your life. What it Means in Practice So, how can you use this to your advantage? As you work toward your next career goal, use these pointers to overcome the urge to move away from any discomfort you encounter: If what should be a major change feels easy, System 1 is likely holding you back from truly challenging yourself. Chaos and discomfort are not negatives. They are essential ingredients to the change and growth process. When you feel the urge to quit working toward your goal, pause. Take stock of where the emotions are coming from. Is the discomfort part of a new muscle you’re building, or have you overworked existing muscles too hard? Be kind to yourself. Career goals are often about change, and change is a process, not an outcome. Enjoy the journey. Don’t hold happiness hostage to the completion of the goal. These Seemingly Innocent Mistakes Will Make You Lose Your Job Faster According to a study  conducted by Pew Research Center, 77 percent of Americans fear that automation will  one day be able to do many of the jobs currently done by humans. But automation isn’t poised to replace people anytime soon - while it may require individuals to uplevel their skills to stay ahead of the curve, “research shows that large-scale job losses due to automation are unlikely,” says Glassdoor Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain . If you’re considered a knowledge worker, job-hungry robots probably aren’t a threat to you in the immediate future - but what might be a threat is how you behave and perform at work.  Some seemingly innocent mistakes could even cost you your job. If you make one or more of the following errors, you’ll want to course-correct ASAP before you end up   jobless. Perhaps the most innocent mistake that can get you fired is a lack of emotional intelligence. One story that crystallizes how important emotional intelligence is: the tale of   an intern who was fired.  This intern wasn’t satisfied with the dress code of the organization she was working for. When she saw that one of her fellow employees wasn’t required to adhere to the dress code, she reached out to her manager to ask for laxity in the dress code as well, citing her colleague as an example. When her manager didn’t approve, she mobilized all the interns who shared a similar view to petition management about changing the dress code. The day after the petition, everybody who signed it was fired. They would later find that the employee who had been given an exemption from the dress code was a former soldier who lost her leg while serving. While some working conditions truly do merit a formal grievance, being expected to comply with a pre-established dress code isn’t one of them- especially if you’re only going to be working there temporarily.  If this intern had more emotional intelligence, she might have realized that drafting a petition could come across as aggressive or entitled. Had she recognized this, she likely wouldn’t have gone through with the petition - and would probably still have her job. Whether it is in your interactions with management or fellow employees, the importance of being emotionally intelligent cannot be overstated; as you can see by the example above, lacking emotional intelligence can backfire and cost you your job. Surely streaming a TV show from a slightly sketchy website or opening a suspicious email on your work computer can’t hurt you that much, right? Well, not so fast. There has been no shortage of data hacks in the news recently, and many times, internal employees - even executives - are found to be at fault, and are sometimes terminated as a result. Hackers are getting more sophisticated and going after the money, and companies aren’t content to just sit down and watch. More likely than not, your company has security flaws that could be exploited, but woe to you if these errors are exploited due to your lack of computer savvy. Protecting yourself isn’t very complicated. Here are some very quick ideas: While some think that radical candor is edgy or cool, it is important to know that - generally - what is cool isn’t always what works. For example, billionaire Elon Musk recently made news for recommending that employees walk out of meetings they don’t like. This view was lauded and even approved by a lot of experts. It is important to know, however, that while this might work for a billionaire, or someone working in Elon Musk’s companies, it wouldn’t work for the average employee. Walking out of a meeting organized by your superior is probably one of the fastest ways to get fired . If you find a meeting boring or a waste of time, it would be a better idea to find a more diplomatic way to express dissatisfaction. The same goes for what you say - having no filter and being insensitive to your co-workers in the name of being “real” won’t only make you enemies, it can get you fired. Oftentimes, you can quickly form strong bonds with people in your professional circle - including superiors - and it’s easy to want to start adding them as friends on your personal social media. Unfortunately, this can backfire. Many people have lost their jobs for what would have ordinarily been an innocent mistake simply because they added people from professional circles on social media. Take the example of Kevin Colvin, an Anglo Irish Bank intern who emailed his boss to get time off for a family emergency, only to later post a photo of himself partying. Colvin’s boss saw the photo on Facebook, sent it to him in an email attachment and fired him. While Colvin was guilty of dishonesty, it is clear that mixing his personal life with his professional life also played a role in his getting fired. We are all unique individuals, but when you’re in the corporate world, it is worth asking yourself whether your values line up with those of your company. If not, it may not be the right fit for you. According to a study of over 1,400 North American CEOs and CFOs, 90 percent of executives believe that culture is important at their firms, and 92 percent believe that improving a company’s culture will improve its value. Not aligning with your company’s culture, then, can have detrimental effects. Here’s an experience related by realtor Suzanne Friedman that shows how important a company’s corporate culture and value system can be: “ I had a coworker who lost her job because of her Christmas card. We worked for an animal-rights activist who was also a vegetarian. Even though our company had nothing to do with animal rights, most of the people who worked there shared a common love of animals. My friend hid that she was married to a hunter, and that her kids also hunted. One year, her Christmas card showed them all sitting before the fireplace at a hunting lodge, complete with animal-head trophies on the wall. She totally forgot, and sent the card to all of the employees - including my boss.” It might not be fair, but at some companies, things like this matter. She insisted that they provided the time for her to breastfeed and that she be allowed to use a room that wasn’t the bathroom where they initially wanted to put her.I wish I had fought that hard for my rights, but I was way more timid than she was. If you don’t have someone in your office like that, you may have to assume that role whether you’re comfortable with it or not. Some bosses and companies just don’t value the role of breastfeeding yet. Hopefully that will change someday, but until then we need to keep fighting.Here’s what you need to know about the rights you have as a breastfeeding mother under the federal law, “Break Time for Nursing Mothers.” Who Is Covered: Sadly, not everyone is. It covers hourly employees who are already under the Fair Labor Standards Act (source). How It Helps Breastfeeding Moms: Since health professionals have backed breast milk as being nutritionally superior to formula, this law was created in an attempt to help working moms continue to breastfeed. It forces employers to give their employees a break so they can breastfeed during work hours. It also requires that they give them a place where they can have some privacy while pumping. Are There Any Rules Or Conditions: The private room you’re allowed to pump in can’t be a bathroom. No one should be able to see into the room while you’re breastfeeding so if you have any known office perverts, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Who Enforces This Law: The watchdog of this law is the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division. They have a general toll-free number you can call if you’re experiencing any problems. The number is 800-487-9243. How Long Can I Pump For: The time portion of the law is open to interpretation - it requires that you be given a reasonable amount of time to pump. This time isn’t necessarily paid though, unless your boss already has paid breaks for everyone. You shouldn’t milk this time for all it’s worth though - you should pump and get back to work. During lunch, you’ll want to eat while pumping to save time. Here’s what you’ll want to do before your first day back at work arrives.One Month Before Returning To Work: Start stockpiling breast milk in the freezer. You should have at least enough milk for one day of feedings, which may be about 25 to 30 ounces. You can easily have enough stored if you begin pumping your breasts a few minutes after your baby nurses. You’ll usually be able to get an extra ounce or two every time. That’ll be more than enough to stockpile 30 ounces in a month. Talk to your boss to figure out what room you’ll be pumping in when you return to work. Figure out any adjustments you have to make to your schedule. Choose a daycare provider so you know who will be feeding your baby when you’re away. When selecting someone to watch your baby, you’ll want to consider whether they are a smoker and if they’ll follow the precise instructions that you’ll likely have for them. (source) One Week Before Returning To Work: Make sure you have all the equipment you’ll need and go over your plans for the week you go back to work. Give your plan a trial run. You can even invite your caregiver over to do a test while you’re out of the house. That will help you identify any possible flaws in the plan. First Week Back At Work: Be prepared for an emotional week. Leaving your baby isn’t easy, even if you’re looking forward to going back to work. You may struggle with guilt - just know that’s totally normal. Make sure you’re still pumping regularly to produce enough milk and ward off any milk supply issues like clogged milk ducts. (source) There will probably be some last minute curve balls you’ll have to deal with. Just keep your chin up and realize this first week will probably be your hardest one. Finding a schedule that works for you at home and at work can be a challenge. But just remember that you’ll learn as you go. And with practice, you’ll get better at juggling everything.Here’s a checklist of things you’ll want to remember to do at various points of the day.Before Bed: Clean your pumps and bottles. Sanitize them if you choose to do so. Make your lunch and pack any snacks that you’ll need at work the next day. Before Going To Work In The Morning: Breastfeed your baby before you leave. If you have time, pump any remaining milk if he doesn’t fully drain your breasts. Put your pump, storage containers and ice packs in your breast milk cooler. Double check that there’s enough breast milk already in the refrigerator for your baby while you’re at work and that you don’t need to get any extra from your freezer stash. When You’re At Work: Try to pump on time, according to the schedule you’ve set up. It should be around every three hours, and you should never let it extend past four hours. Otherwise you risk dealing with embarrassing engorgement at work. Make sure to keep things as sterile as possible, including washing your hands. Try to relax, which can be hard at work when you’re pumping. Keep a set of your baby’s clothing in your purse so you can smell it or look at a picture of your baby to trigger letdown. Make sure to run hot, soapy water through your pump parts every time after you pump so it won’t need a thorough cleaning for your next session. When You First See Your Child Again, Whether It’s At Home Or At A Daycare: Breastfeed your baby as soon as you can. If there isn’t a quiet place to do it at the daycare, you might want to do it in the car before you head home. That’s especially important to do if you have a long commute. At Home: Label and refrigerate the breast milk you pumped at work as soon as you walk through the door. If your baby will need that breast milk the next day, put it in the refrigerator. Otherwise, it should go in the freezer. Continue breastfeeding your baby throughout the course of the evening whenever she’s hungry. Make sure that you carve out a lot of one-on-one time for you and your baby. That time should include plenty of skin-to-skin contact. Remember, your new working schedule is a huge adjustment for your baby - not just for you. She might need some extra attention. What’s A Good Schedule For Pumping At Work?Any sample schedule will have to be tweaked to fit your specific needs. But this is a good general schedule that you can revise to fit your life: 6:30 A.M. - breastfeed your baby at home before you leave for work in the morning. 8:30 A.M. - breastfeed your baby at child care. If you have a babysitter who goes to your house, give your baby one final breastfeed before you leave for your work day. 11:30 A.M. - pump during your lunch hour at work in a private room. 2:30 P.M. - pump during a break at work. 5:30 P.M. - pump one final time at work, or if you’ve already left for your work day, hold off on the pumping. Instead, breastfeed your baby when you pick him up at childcare. 8:00 P.M. - breastfeed your baby right before you put him down for bed. Even for the most prepared women, going back to work while still breastfeeding is a huge challenge. You have to think ahead and troubleshoot problems as they crop up.It took me weeks before I felt like I wasn’t on the verge of a nervous breakdown at all times. I would go to bed at night, unable to sleep because I was running through my plan for the next day and getting up because I was sure I forgot to do something before I crawled in bed.The schedule does get easier with time. You’ll get there. Just remember the first few weeks will be the most difficult ones for you and for your baby.To make it an easier transition, you may want to consider these tips.1. Make Sure You Pick Your Breast Pump CarefullyYour breast pump can either be your greatest ally or your biggest foe. It depends on how wisely you choose when you’re buying one.If you’re pumping at work, you should go with a double electric breast pump because you’ll be pumping so frequently.When choosing the right breast p ump for work, there are several things you need to consider. How Loud It Is: It can be embarrassing when you’re pumping in the workplace and your co-workers hear a loud, suction noise coming from the other room. Some machines are definitely quieter than others. Does It Operate At More Than One Speed: Having adjustable speeds can be a huge benefit to you. Some women have problems pumping at a lower speed, but can whiz through pumping when there’s a higher speed involved. Is It Portable: You can have the greatest breast pump in the world, but if it isn’t easy to take from place to place it won’t be a good choice for the workplace. How Does It Get Its Power: Does the breast pump operate on a battery or does it come with a power cord? If you have a designated breastfeeding room, but there’s no power outlet, you’ll be in trouble when you go back to work. 2. Stick To Your Game PlanMake sure you’re keeping up your milk supply because if you’re starting to dry up, it can make pumping at work way more difficult and stressful than it has to be.The best thing you can do to help yourself while pumping at work is to relax. It’s hard to do, but it will make your milk flow faster and easier.You can distract yourself by the fact you’re at work and from the dozens of tasks you still need to complete as soon as you walk out of the door. Try looking at some magazines while you’re pumping (source).3. Find Unique Ways You Can MultitaskIf you find it’s too hard at the office to multitask, you can try taking some shortcuts to help you stay on track.You can use a hands free pump, or a hands free pumping bra which will allow you to eat lunch or snacks while you’re breastfeeding. Nutrition is an important factor in breastfeeding and breastfeeding women need more calories than other moms, so finding time to eat is important.While your hands are free, you can also create a to-do list that will help keep you on track.4. Invest In A Portable CoolerYou can buy a portable breast milk cooler that will let you transport your breast milk so you don’t risk it going bad before you can get it home.Since you aren’t planning on using that breast milk until the next day, you’ll want to start chilling it immediately (source). Just put it in your portable cooler and use ice packs to keep it cool until you can pop it in the refrigerator. If your office has a refrigerator, you can use that to keep it cool too.5. Store Your Pump In The RefrigeratorLife saver: Because you won’t have the time to sterilize the breast pump while you’re at work, you can help keep it sterile by putting the pump parts in a Ziplock bag and storing them in the refrigerator (source). If you have a closed system, you can simply take off the parts that come in contact with the milk and put them in the refrigerator.You can save the step of sterilizing the b reast pump for when you’re at home at night.6. Find A Comfortable Spot To PumpIf you aren’t happy with the room your workplace has picked out for you to use for your pumping needs, try talking to the human resources department or your boss to see if another room is available.You shouldn’t expect four-star accommodations, but if your breast pump has a power cord and there’s no outlet in sight, they may be able to figure out something that will work for you.Be polite but firm about your needs. Since my first baby, I’ve learned the importance of speaking up for myself. That’s hard sometimes for a lot of women, but we need to keep working to get better at it.7. Keep Everything OrganizedIt helps tremendously if you have one designated breastfeeding bag that you take to work. It’ll be just like a diaper bag, but this bag is for all the tools you’ll need during the day to stay on top of things.You’ll want your pump, the accessories and your cooler to all fit inside it. Yo u might also want to go old school and throw a notebook in there so you can quickly jot down what time you pumped throughout the day.8. Maintain Your Milk SupplyYou’ll want to make sure you aren’t skipping any pumping sessions and that you’re fully draining each breast during your pumping sessions.Make sure you’re eating enough and taking in enough liquids too.Letdown Hack: If you’re struggling to achieve letdown at work, bring a memento in your breastfeeding bag that reminds you of your baby (source). That reminder won’t be the same as having your baby with you, but it should do the trick.When I was pumping at work, I liked to bring my phone with me so I had short videos of my baby I could watch. Letdown was a breeze after watching a few seconds of my adorable daughter.9. Manage The StressGoing back to work when you have a baby can be enough to put you over the edge. Everything seems so hard at first.There’s a few things you can do to manage the stress you feel and co ntinue making healthy choices that will benefit you in the long run. Ask for help from your partner, whether it’s getting your lunch ready for the next day or washing the breast pump at the end of the night. Try to get some regular exercise. That’s a great stress buster. Make sure you plan ahead. We sometimes can create our own avoidable stress by putting things off until the last minute. As a mom now, you need to plan for two, not just one. Get to work a few minutes early so you can set up your pumping area (source). You won’t have to lose precious lunch minutes during the day to do it. Make sure you’re eating plenty of healthy snacks with a lot of protein in them. 10. Manage Your Travel ScheduleIf you travel for work, you can always ask your boss if there is someone else in the office who can take the occasional trip for you. If you’re a valuable employee, many employers will want to work with you to find a schedule that works for you.You’ll want to make sure that you continue to pump while you travel, even if you’ll be gone so long that the milk won’t be good by the time you get back. It’s better to pump some bottles of milk that you’ll end up dumping than risk your milk supply drying up.11. Use Your Downtime To Stay HealthyDowntime? What’s that? As a new mother, downtime is a rare commodity. There just never seems to be enough hours in the day to find time to relax.But finding time for relaxation and adequate rest is still a priority. While it may be tempting to stay up later than you should at night to fit some extra hours in the day, that’s a bad idea. You’d be better off getting a good night’s sleep.Make sure you’re cutting down on the caffeine after 5 p.m., or better yet, don’t have any at all after that hour (source). That’ll help you go to sleep quickly when you go to bed.You can also use the weekends as a time to catch up on sleep. My husband would get up with the baby on Saturday mornings so I could sleep in late after a long week of pulling double duty.12. Keep Your Baby Close During Your Home TimeTo help you both still feel as connected as you were before you went to work, you should stay near your baby as much as possible in your off hours. You can still get plenty of skin-to-skin time.Try to limit electronics as much as possible during that time as well. That can be a huge time sucker and that’s something that you don’t have much of at this point in your life.With the exception of my one trailblazing coworker, my workplace wasn’t a kid-friendly one. It was filled with men who didn’t have kids and many of the women there didn’t either. So perhaps they didn’t understand w hy breastfeeding is so important or that they shouldn’t mess with a stressed-out mom.Here are some of the uncomfortable situations you might encounter at work.1. When You Spring A LeakYour breasts can have a mind of their own when you start to push back your pumping session. You can become engorged and before you know it, milk will leak out, making your shirt wet.This is one of the most embarrassing parts of being a mom. Your best bet is to stay on time with your pumping sessions and hope this doesn’t happen.But you should be prepared just in case. You can wear breast pads in your bra to absorb any leaks. You may also want to toss an extra work shirt into your breastfeeding bag for any emergencies you’ll have.2. Rude Or Insensitive CoworkersSome people just don’t get it. Whether they’re socially awkward or just have no sense of proper boundaries, you might have a coworker or two who makes you uncomfortable with their comments.Some things they say may just be a lame attempt at a joke, but other times they make inappropriate, creepy comments.If it becomes a problem for you, talk to your human resources department or your boss. You shouldn’t have to put up with that kind of harassment in the workplace.3. A Squeaking PumpBreast pumps don’t fade into the background - they let people know they’re there. Whenever I would pump at work, I would do everything I could to muffle the sound, but I still felt like it was so loud that everyone was annoyed with me.To avoid so much noise, search for a quieter breast pump and keep the door closed in your private pumping room. If your pump is still too loud, try lightly draping a baby blanket around the pump to somewhat muffle the sound.4. Privacy ConcernsIf you want your pumping session to be successful, you need to relax as much as you can. Oftentimes, that means being the only one in the room.So if there are any other breastfeeding moms in your workplace, you may want to consider a sign-up sheet for the privat e room so it won’t be double booked. That would defeat the purpose of a private room.You might also want to consider letting people know ahead of time what you’re going to be doing in that room, or putting a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door so that you don’t end up with the awkward situation of one of your coworkers seeing your boobs.Pinterest has a great selection of free printables.Before I went back to work, I spent a lot of time and energy trying to figure out the answers to the big questions I had. Here are the ones I was most concerned with.1. How Frequently Should I Pump When I Go Back To Work?In order to keep your milk supply up and express enough milk to feed your baby, you should pump every three hours while you’re at work (source). That can work out to be twice per work shift or three times per work shift, depending upon how long your work day is and how long your commute is.You’ll need to work out an exact schedule with your boss, but it helps to use your lunch break for one of the pumping sessions. The other pumping times will depend upon what your busiest work hours are or if you have any paid breaks you can take advantage of for pumping.2. How Much Milk Will My Baby Need Every Day?You’ll need enough milk to feed your baby for a full day. The exact number of ounces will depend upon how old your baby is and how much he’s drinking.But, on average, you’ll need about 25 ounces of breast milk a day (source). If you’d like to aim a bit higher just in case your baby is a big eater, 30 ounces should keep you covered.3. How Should I Contain Breast Milk And Store It?You can store breast milk in storage bottles or bags in the freezer so they’ll last longer than they do in the refrigerator.The night before you work your first day of every week, you should take a container of milk or two from the freezer and put it in the refrigerator to thaw. You can divide it up into a day’s worth of bottles the next morning so your baby’s careg iver is ready to go.The breast milk you pump at work the next day will be kept in the refrigerator until your baby needs it the following day.The milk you pump on the last day of your work will be frozen until it’s needed.Welcome to the weird world of pumping breast milk at work. While it may feel strange at first, you’ll eventually think it isn’t a big deal at all. By the second or third month, I no longer felt strange about it and I don’t think anyone else did either.My milk supply never suffered and my baby was successfully breastfed through the first year of her life. I can’t stress enough, though, how important organization was during this time in my life. If you stay on top of things, it will make your life much easier.When you feel stressed or overwhelmed, just keep in mind why you’re doing this.
